Safety Issues

Primary Concern: Motorist/Bicycle/Pedestrian Safety

Federal lands can not only have significant vehicle traffic, but significant bicycle and pedestrian traffic as well. Issues can arise from having to separate these different modes of travel. Image 1 and Image 2 show examples of heavy pedestrian use near different roadways.

The possible solutions to address potential vehicle conflicts with bicycles and pedestrians includes: building or modifying infrastructure to reduce the likelihood of conflict, using ITS to inform visitors of potential conflicts, or using policies or transit to reduce the number of vehicles on the roadways. The following links let you view the Fact Sheets which provide detailed information on the possible solutions relating to this issue.
