Traffic Congestion

Primary Causes: Trip Purpose-Vehicle Type Mix

Traffic congestion can occur because of the mix of vehicle types on a roadway, or the purpose of the trip (commercial trip versus pleasure trip). Image 1 shows an example of two large vehicles passing by each other, while Image 2 shows a sign providing information on an Alternate Route for trucks to use.

The possible solutions to address these issues includes: building or modifying infrastructure to separate vehicle types, using ITS to classify vehicles, policies to limit or restrict certain vehicle types, and using transit to reduce the number of vehicles. The following links let you view the Fact Sheets which provide detailed information on the possible solutions relating to this issue.
