Traffic Congestion

Primary Causes: Traveler Information

Traffic congestion can sometimes occur because travelers/visitors don't have information on alternate routes, road construction, etc. Image 1 shows an example of a Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) sign in a Federal land, Image 2 shows a Dynamic Message Sign (DMS) and Image 3 shows a sign for the 511 Traveler Information Number.

A brown wooden sign with white letters that says a Dynamic Message Sign (DMS)a sign for the 511 Traveler Information Number.

Most of the solutions to address this issue are related to ITS solutions that increase the amount of "outlets" or "portals" for traveler information. Potential infrastructure solutions include building Visitor Centers, or providing off-site visitor information. The following links let you view the Fact Sheets which provide detailed information on the possible solutions relating to this issue.
