Regional Transit Coordination

Regional Transit Coordination

General Description:

Regional Transit Coordination develops the relationship between neighboring transit agencies in an effort to improve transfers and the overall efficiency of the region’s transit operations.  Many communities organize transit through regional transit authorities.  Federal land managers may need to contact gateway communities to determine what types of existing transit systems are in place and how the Federal land can better integrate with these systems.

Effects of Solution:

þ     Increase Passenger Throughput (Transit improves throughput)

¨     Increase Roadway Capacity

¨     Manage System Efficiency

þ     Reduce Local Demand (Reduces vehicular demand)

Regional Transit Coordination can increase passenger throughput by improving the system’s efficiency.  In addition, more passengers who choose transit over private vehicles reduce overall demands on a facility.

Examples of Implementation:

See Additional Resources section.

Cost/Financial Information:

Coordination has been shown to make more transit service available for the same amount of money.  However, planning is necessary in the beginning, so some “upfront” costs are expected.
