Transit/Private Vehicle Type Regulations

General Description:
Regulations allow separation or exclusion of transit and/or private vehicles in certain areas under certain conditions. For example, seasonal restrictions could be used to keep private vehicles from sensitive areas while allowing transit-type tours to continue to service an area. Vehicle size or type may also be used as reasons to restrict travel in an area. Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) and Automated Vehicle Classification (AVC) systems may be used to identify vehicles in the traffic stream that do not meet the restrictions, while Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) inform the motorist of the violation and point out an alternate route.
Effects of Solution:
¨ Increase Passenger Throughput
¨ Increase Roadway Capacity
þ Manage System Efficiency (Allows for resource protection)
þ Reduce Local Demand (Reduces vehicular demand on a facility)
Travel regulations manage the system efficiency by making visitors utilize transit options rather than private vehicles. In addition, the reduction in private vehicles reduces the overall demand on a facility.

Cost/Financial Information:
The cost of implementing Transit/Private Regulations may be relatively inexpensive if only marketing and enforcement actions are needed. Larger areas may require extensive amounts of enforcement and public awareness efforts.
