Law/Speed Enforcement Techniques

Law/Speed Enforcement Techniques

General Description:

Law Enforcement Techniques that may improve motorist compliance include innovative methods of enforcing speed policies such as photo radar and Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder (VASCAR).  In addition, speed traps may be used to enforce speed limits.  Intelligent transportation systems to help reduce speeds include Variable Speed Display Signs (VSDS) and Portable Speed Monitoring Systems (PSMS).  Information on these solutions can be found in the ITS section of the solutions.

Effects of Solution:

¨     Increase Passenger Throughput

¨     Increase Roadway Capacity

þ     Manage System Efficiency (Improves safety)

¨     Reduce Local Demand

These techniques are usually not solutions in themselves.  They must be implemented with proper enforcement representation, policies, and public awareness.

Examples of Implementation:

No specific examples available at the time of publication.

Costs/Financial Information:

Costs will vary depending upon the techniques used, as well as any systems/technology that are implemented.
