Alternative Route Regulations/Incentives

General Description:
Alternative Route Regulations and Incentives consist of policies created to alter motorist route selection. Diversion of heavy truck traffic to alternative routes may significantly reduce congestion. The separation of visiting motorists and those that are traveling through an area will reduce the demand placed on the area’s facilities. In addition, the regulations may be used as a form of demand management by requiring some motorists to choose alternate routes. Media sources, such as billboards and radio, can be used to notify motorists of alternative routes. Motorist information must be placed in appropriate locations in order for motorists to make informed decisions about altering their route. Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Highway Advisory Radio (HAR), and other means may be used to inform travelers of alternate routes.
Effects of Solution:
¨ Increase Passenger Throughput
¨ Increase Roadway Capacity
þ Manage System Efficiency (Improves route selection)
þ Reduce Local Demand (Spreads demand to other facilities)
Demand may be shifted from one entrance or roadway to another. This allows for better system efficiency.
Examples of Implementation:
No specific examples available at the time of publication.
Cost/Financial Information:
The costs associated with encouraging motorists to use existing routes ranges from sign improvements (i.e. billboards, advisory signs) to utilizing ITS solutions like Highway Advisory Radio (HAR), Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), 511, and other media sources like television, radio, and websites.
