Improved Traffic Control Devices

Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards.

General Description:

Improved Traffic Control Devices, such as sign improvements, signals, and pavement markings, can better notify motorists of regulations, fees, services, road conditions, wildlife, or any other relevant information.  There are three types of traffic signs: regulatory signs, warning signs, and informational signs.  Size, shape, uniformity, and placement are all important considerations with traffic control devices.  All traffic control devices must meet the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards.

Effects of Solution:

¨     Increase Passenger Throughput

¨     Increase Roadway Capacity

þ     Manage System Efficiency (Can improve vehicle interactions)

¨     Reduce Local Demand

Improvements may be made with better traffic control, but there must be additional steps taken to improve conditions.  Traffic control is a form of system management.
