Climbing/Passing Lanes

shows a climbing or passing lane.

General Description:

Climbing lanes allow faster moving vehicles to use a separate lane to pass slower vehicles.  The separation of the slower vehicles from the traffic stream allows for greater capacity on upgrades and sections of two-lane highways.  Typically, the addition of a climbing or passing lane is considered expensive and many Federal lands prefer to create Pullouts instead.

Effects of Solution:

¨     Increase Passenger Throughput

þ     Increase Roadway Capacity (Allows faster vehicles to pass)

þ     Manage System Efficiency (Creates most efficient use of the facility)

¨     Reduce Local Demand

Additional lanes add capacity to the facility.  Separation of slow moving vehicles from the traffic stream creates an efficient use of the system.
