Work Zone ITS Applications

General Description:
Work Zone Intelligent Transportation Systems Applications refers to technologies that enhance worker safety and improves traffic control during construction activities. There are many different ways that ITS solutions can be implemented into work zones. They may be used to monitor and manage traffic, provide traveler information, detect incidents, enhance safety of the road user and workers, increasing capacity, contribute to enforcement efforts, track and evaluate contract incentives/disincentives (performance-based contracting), and assist in work zone planning.
Effects of Solution:
¨ Increase Passenger Throughput
þ Increase Roadway Capacity (Optimizes vehicle flow)
þ Manage System Efficiency (Provides safety measures)
¨ Reduce Local Demand
Examples of Implementation:
See the Additional Resources section below for more information.
Cost/Financial Information:
Costs will vary depending upon what systems/technologies are used, such as portable Dynamic Message Signs, Portable Speed Monitoring Systems, etc.
