Variable Speed Display Sign (VSDS)

Variable Speed Display Sign (VSDS)

General Description:

Variable Speed Display Signs are used to display the current speed limit in areas using variable speed limits.  Variable speed limit systems use sensors to monitor prevailing traffic and/or weather conditions, posting appropriate enforceable speed limits on dynamic message signs. Typical signs will display the speed limit for assigned to specific lanes including truck lanes. Other variations include static speed limit signs and a display for the vehicle’s speed.

Effects of Solution:

¨     Increase Passenger Throughput

¨     Increase Roadway Capacity

þ     Manage System Efficiency (Improves safety and speed conditions)

¨     Reduce Local Demand

VSDS is primarily utilized to inform motorists of speed limits and vehicle speeds.  It is used in areas where it is appropriate to alter speed limits and as a supplement to enforcement, with the intent of reducing vehicle speeds for safety reasons.

Examples of Implementation:

Cost/Financial Information:

(Cost/financial information is estimated, and will vary based on size and scope of project, number of units, etc.)

Capital Cost

Variable Speed Display Sign                      $3.7-5K

The low range is for a variable speed limit display system.  High range includes static speed sign, speed detector (radar), and display system.  Other costs may include sensors for weather or traffic flow.  See the Roadside Detector fact sheet for more information.
