Badlands National Park -
Cedar Pass Slide and Cliff Shelf Slide Deformation Mapping Project...

Location:
Badlands National Park is located in southwest South Dakota. Within the park, located along Route 10, is the Cedar Pass Slide Area. The slide area encompasses two slides: the Cedar Pass Slide, a small, fast moving slide, and the Cliff Shelf Slide, a large, slow moving slide.

Ground Movement History:

Initial signs of instability arose during the late 1950’s when the road was graded and paved. Major problems arose in early 1990, when the parking lot began failing due to increased slope movements. Slide movement data collected since the early 1990’s have continued to show increased movements until the Cedar Pass Landslide was buttressed in the fall of 2000.

Technology Applied:
This project uses InSAR technology to provide information of the magnitude and extent of ground movement within the Cedar Pass Slide area.
