Last Revised: 11-23-2009

The Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration in cooperation with the Grand Canyon National Park and National Park Service (NPS) are proposing to rehabilitate the historic seven-mile long Hermit Road, located on the South Rim between Grand Canyon Village and Hermits Rest. Proposed work includes widening and resurfacing Hermit Road, improving existing trails, overlooks and parking areas, and constructing a multi-use trail.

The original road was built in the 1930s with a top width of the roadway at time of construction of 20 feet. In many areas spalling along the edge line has reduced the pavement width to as little as 18 feet. The existing pavement has severe block cracking and showing signs of severe distress. The parking areas along the route suffer from the same problems but are not as pronounced.

Preliminary design plans indicates that the roadway will be closed during construction. Full closure details will be developed during final design.
